Labor Day Activities for Seniors

Labor Day Activities for Seniors

Labor Day recognizes the contributions and achievements of American workers and is
traditionally observed on the first Monday in September. The long weekend is a great time to relax, enjoy time off work and celebrate the unofficial end of summer with loved ones. Whether you’re an older adult or a family member of an aging loved one, here are some fun ways to celebrate the Labor Day weekend together.

Attend a backyard barbeque.

Gathering with friends and family outside is the perfect way to enjoy good food and
spend quality time together this Labor Day. Play yard games with your grandkids, like
badminton or croquet, sit back and relax under the shade or catch up with family over a delicious meal. Ask the host if you can bring your favorite side dish or dessert if you enjoy preparing food for parties.

Gather with other seniors.

This Labor Day, consider meeting up with friends for breakfast at a local restaurant, a picnic in the park or a round of golf. Enjoy shopping? Grab a friend and head to your favorite shopping center. Labor Day weekend is the perfect time to take advantage of sales and stock up on cold-weather wardrobe staples for the fall season.

Check out local events.

Check your community’s event calendar to find a variety of activities and things to do
near you during Labor Day weekend. Often towns will host parades, festivals, fireworks, concerts and other public gatherings to celebrate the long holiday weekend and the winding down of summer season.

Explore nature.

Labor Day may mark the unofficial end of summer, but it is hardly the time to stay
indoors. Enjoy what is left of the summer season by getting outdoors for a hike with a
friend, a bike ride with the grandkids or birdwatching at a nearby park. Being active
outside is an excellent way to breathe in the fresh air, try something new and improve
your overall health.

Get creative.

Whether you enjoy crafts with friends, your grandchildren, or on your own, consider
trying a fun craft, an art project, a DIY home project or new recipe this Labor Day
weekend. Need inspiration? Consider making a new fall wreath for the front door or a
homemade pie for your Labor Day barbecue—the possibilities are endless.

Stay cool.

Depending on where you live, it’s not uncommon for Labor Day weather to be hot and
humid. Stay safe by drinking plenty of water, avoiding too much sun and seeking shade or indoor air conditioning when you need to. If you like swimming, consider spending Labor Day near a pool and enjoy one last swim before summer comes to an end.

There are many ways to enjoy a long weekend with family and friends this Labor Day weekend. Make sure you set aside time to relax, get outdoors, learn new something new, spend time with those you love and bid farewell to a wonderful summer season!
