More than 20 team members from Senior Solutions communities recently gathered in Knoxville for an immersive, all-day Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia Care Seminar. The goal? To deeply strengthen leadership, communication, education, and compassionate care across our entire organization.
This training marks the launch of a major, multi-state initiative that will continue expanding throughout Senior Solutions communities across Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas.
Leadership That Learns Together
What made the room truly vibrant was the sheer variety of roles represented. Executive Directors, Directors of Nursing, Activity Professionals, Caregivers, and Marketing Directors all participated side-by-side.
Quality dementia care isn’t just a frontline responsibility—it starts at the top and requires a unified, shared commitment across every single department.
Led by Certified Dementia Practitioner® (CDP®) trainer Helen Porter, the seminar blended rigorous education with interactive discussion, hands-on activities, and real-world caregiving scenarios.
Walking in Their Shoes: The Sensory Experience
One of the most profound moments of the day involved interactive sensory exercises. To simulate the daily frustrations of cognitive decline, participants donned specialized goggles, gloves, and audio distractions. The exercise intentionally triggered the confusion, overstimulation, and communication barriers that individuals living with dementia face.
“That particular exercise served as a powerful reminder that dementia care requires patience, empathy, flexibility, and understanding far beyond routine caregiving tasks,” noted Christina Trentham, Executive Vice President of Operations & Clinical Services.
The Evolution of Care: Shifting to a “Person-Centered” Reality
Throughout the day, attendees explored critical modern topics, including wandering prevention, behavioral expressions, sleep disturbances, and advancements in Alzheimer’s research.
A major takeaway was just how rapidly memory care is evolving. Historically, dementia care focused heavily on the routines and needs of the caregiver. Today, the industry is experiencing a profound paradigm shift toward Person-Centered Care.
| • Old Approach (Caregiver-Centered): Focused strictly on institutional routines, schedules, and administrative convenience. • New Approach (Person-Centered): Caregivers step directly into the resident’s perceived reality, honoring their current timeline to prevent anxiety and friction. |
By stepping out of our factual timeline and gently joining a resident in their current reality, we drastically reduce agitation, prevent confusion, and enhance the entire caregiving experience.
Seeing the Person Behind the Diagnosis
Even as cognitive abilities shift, core emotional needs remain entirely intact. The human desire for companionship, affection, purpose, and love does not disappear.
“Sometimes people hear the word dementia and immediately focus on loss,” said Kim Olen, Director of Marketing. “But one of the biggest reminders from the seminar was that our residents are still people first. They still want to laugh, feel included, be heard, feel safe, and know they matter. That human connection is everything.”
Elevating Standards with Certified Dementia Practitioner (CDP®) Pathways
To turn this education into a lasting professional standard, Senior Solutions Management Group proudly sponsored the pathway toward the Certified Dementia Practitioner® (CDP®) designation through the National Council of Certified Dementia Practitioners (NCCDP).
The organization invested fully in the seminar experience by providing comprehensive handbooks, educational materials, certification support, and a catered Olive Garden lunch.
Earning a CDP® certification represents a prestigious commitment to excellence. The benefits of this benchmark include:
- Enhanced Clinical Skills: Equipping staff with advanced, evidence-based intervention skills.
- Improved Patient Outcomes: Directly elevating the quality of life for residents through certified person-centered techniques.
- A Culture of Excellence: The NCCDP recommends a gold standard of having at least one Certified Dementia Practitioner® on-site per shift to guide frontline care.
Because the certification requires rigorous re-certification every two years, our families can rest assured that our teams will always stay at the cutting edge of dementia care practices.
Connection is Everything
At the end of the day, exceptional memory care is about far more than managing memory loss. It is about preserving dignity, building trust, reducing fear, creating meaningful moments, and helping residents feel valued every single day.
Behind every diagnosis is a person with a rich story, deep relationships, and vibrant emotions. Senior Solutions is proud to invest in the continuous education that honors those stories, supporting our teams so they can provide the exceptional, respectful care our residents deserve.
