Connectivity Key to Happiness for Senior Living Residents

Connectivity Key to Happiness for Senior Living Residents

Connectivity Key to Happiness for Senior Living ResidentsWhen you think about who needs access to the internet, tablets, smartphones and all the modern technology tools that keep us connected, you may not think about your aging parents who are thinking about moving to a senior living residence. However, consider the conclusions of a new study. Dr. Helen Feist of the University of Adelaide, Australia, explored how technology could help older people in the more rural areas of Australia. She spent three years on this study and concluded that ,”In order for people to remain integrated within a world that increasingly relies on new technology, it is important that older people are offered opportunities to adopt and use new technologies such as computers, smartphones, personal tablets and the internet.”

It’s perhaps surprising to learn that her study showed that more than 33 percent of those ages 65-79 years old were willing to learn new technologies, and 25 percent of those 80 years and older also wanted to gain this knowledge. The main reason? Dr. Feist notes that, “the factor that motivates older citizens the most to take up new technology is the desire to stay connected with family and friends.” Further, she found that seniors who pick up new skills have better confidence and health and enjoy “richer levels of social and civic engagement and are more resilient to life stressors and crises.” We agree with Dr. Feist. In one of our previous blogs, we said that technology is essential to keeping today’s senior population engaged, challenged and satisfied.

Make sure that you seek out a senior living residential community with the latest technology tools and a staff that’s eager to help train your loved one on these new tools so you can keep in touch and your mom or dad can stay connected and be happier and healthier.
