10 Ways to Put the Excitement Back in Assisted Living Resident Lives

assisted living residents excitementCheck the activity calendar to see what activities are offered by those assisted living communities you may be considering for yourself or your loved one. Many of these communities have begun offering activities that go far beyond what many assume are available. It’s not just bingo nights and bridge games now (though these are fun too!). Assisted living activity directors recognize the need to provide a variety of activities and entertainment to excite each and every assisted living resident and keep them from feeling bored or under-stimulated.

One of the biggest driving forces for the move to put more excitement and variety in activities is the wave of retiring baby boomers. This huge generation, defined as those born between January 1, 1946 and December 31, 1964, has just started reaching retirement age. The oldest boomers turned 65 in 2011 and there are millions more to follow – 76 million in total. As the boomers move into assisted living, they bring with them years of active living and a belief that they can still do anything they used to do. This is leading to a more dynamic activity calendar at many assisted living communities.

Here are some fun and exciting activities that the assisted living resident might embrace.

1.      Outings – Consider taking residents to NASCAR races, mystery-destination bus rides, museums, opera, and musical concerts. Getting out and about in the larger community is extremely important to provide variety for each assisted living resident.

2.      Magic shows – Some assisted living centers periodically bring in magicians to put on a show for residents. While the community may not be in Las Vegas, residents can enjoy the fun of a Vegas-style show!

3.      BBQ nights – This is a delicious and popular event at some assisted living communities which routinely offer homemade BBQ dinners to residents.

4.      Concerts under the stars – Take the music outside when the weather permits and offer wine, other beverages and healthy snacks to residents and their families.

5.      Cocktail parties – Once a month, throw a cocktail party and feature a new cocktail concoction for residents to try.

6.      Theme dinner – Some communities offer a special dinner with a fun theme, decorations, party favors and a special menu to tie in with the theme.

7.      Travel talk – Bring in an expert, maybe someone from a travel agency, to talk about different regions of the country or world. Invite resident participation in the discussion.

8.      Music and dancing parties – Almost everyone loves music and has great memories of dances they’ve attended. Bring in an instructor to teach line dancing, for example, and play favorite country music tunes.

9.      Men’s Lunch Out/Ladies Who Lunch – Residents select a spot for lunch and enjoy a little same-sex camaraderie.

10.  Talent Show Night – What a great way to highlight resident’s talents and provide some fun socializing.

Be sure to talk to the activity director and find out what regularly scheduled and special activities are available. You may be able to add a new and exciting event to the program. Tell us about activities that are important to you.
